How do I know my attic is under-ventilated?

Common signs: ice dams at the eaves in winter, an attic that is punishingly hot in summer, frost on the underside of the decking in cold weather, condensation, or shingles ageing noticeably faster than they should.

Does ventilation actually stop ice dams?

It addresses the main cause. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, and the meltwater refreezes at the colder eave. Ventilation keeps the deck closer to outside temperature. Insulation and air sealing matter just as much, and if those are the real problem, more vents will not fix it.

Are powered attic fans a good idea?
